Manitoba Immigrants' Safety Initiative

Every Manitoban deserves to work safely.

Mike Waite, former President and CEO of Safety Services Manitoba, and Linda Lalande, Executive Director of ImmigrantCentre, talk about the need for the Manitoba Immigrants' Safety Initiative (MISI).

Projections indicate that in the next few decades, Canada’s labour force will be increasingly dependent upon immigration to support its economy. Keeping immigrant workers safe and healthy at work will benefit workers, employers and all community stakeholders.

The Manitoba Immigrants’ Safety Initiative (MISI) is a pilot project coordinated by Safety Services Manitoba and the ImmigrantCentre Manitoba (formerly the International Centre of Winnipeg). The initiative aims to prevent injury, death and workplace-related illness for new and existing immigrant workers in Manitoba and is funded through the WCB Community Initiatives and Research Program.

The MISI resources include:

  • Information materials on workers' and employers' rights and responsibilities, translated into eight languages
  • Building a Safe Workplace Community, a training course for employers and immigrant workers
  • A Safe Immigrant Workforce for Manitoba, a training course for employers

These resources were designed to help all Manitobans - new and existing - overcome language, cultural and informational barriers on their way to develop safe work practices and procedures.

Leader's Guides and PowerPoints are now available for all resource manuals!
