To Drive or Not To Drive?

A safe workday starts with getting to work safely. With Manitoba’s occasional extreme weather, that can sometimes be a challenge. What do you do when the roads are hazardous and you’re expected at the office?

In a strong safety culture, employers and employees have clear, shared expectations about how to manage the risk of specific hazards – for example, what to do in adverse driving conditions. These expectations are laid out in policy and communicated to employees as part of their orientation and throughout the year as needed.

A policy on extreme weather could allow employees to use vacation days or overtime if they don’t feel it is safe to drive to work. Flexible scheduling or the ability to work from home can enable employees to avoid bad roads while still getting the job done.

Even more important, in a strong safety culture, employees are not ridiculed or disciplined for using the means available to them to manage risk. Employees’ health and safety is paramount, and they have the tools they need to stay injury free.
