Manitoba strengthens workplace safety and health legislation

A series of new provisions and amendments under The Workplace Safety and Health Act (WSH Act) come into effect today, increasing the level of protection for workers in the province and providing swifter penalties for companies who fail to provide a safe work environment.

The changes cover a number of areas including worker rights, the issuing of stop work orders, safety and health orientations for new workers, the role of Manitoba’s Chief Prevention Officer and criteria for exemptions from provisions under The WSH Act. The legislation also requires that every safety and health representative or safety and health committee member is trained to competently fulfil their duties.
