The Weather Outside is Frightful…

But highway driving doesn’t need to be.

Winter presents many challenges for motorists, but those challenges can be amplified if your commute involves highway driving.

Take a look at the tips below to ensure you’re up to speed on best practices when hitting the road during our winter months.

Be Mindful of Conditions
Make sure to check road conditions before leaving for your trip. Highways are often closed when the weather gets worse from snow and ice, and you may have to plan an alternate route in order to get to your destination safely. You can check highway conditions on the Manitoba 511 website for full details.

Be Prepared
Take the time to pack your vehicle with essential supplies like a small shovel, booster cables, flashlight, first aid kit, blanket and other materials to help keep you warm. In the event you get stuck waiting for assistance on the highway, you’re prepared for the cold.

Stay Put
If you get stuck or stranded, you might be tempted to get out of your vehicle to walk for help. It’s important to stay with your vehicle, use your essential supplies to stay safe and call for help rather than braving the elements on foot.
