Course Description

This program teaches participants how to exercise the hierarchy of controls including fall prevention, fall restraint, and fall arrest as each situation will be different when working at heights. Students will learn how to inspect fall protection equipment, how to don a harness, and have the opportunity to experience what it feels like to hang in a harness. Participants will receive a certificate upon successful completion of this course.

This course will teach participants the skills required to train adult learners. This program will begin teaching participants the same program a fall protection participant would learn to ensure potential trainers have a solid working knowledge of working at heights; this includes a written and practical skill assessment to validate training competencies. Participants are than expected to spend up to 30 minutes teaching the Fall Protection course to the other participants to ensure they become comfortable instructing this course at their workplace.

• What Do Fall Protection Systems Look Like?
• Protecting Yourself from Falls
• Theory test and review of test
• Participant to instruct a portion of the Fall Protection course (determined by SSM Instructor)
• Participant instructs and evaluates practical use of the fall protection equipment

Practical Evaluation

Participants will each inspect components of a fall protection system (i.e. harness, lanyards, and hardware). Participants will also have the opportunity to briefly be suspended in a harness.

Manitoba Regulations Part 14

Persons working at a vertical height of 10 feet or more (Manitoba) or 8 feet or more (Federally) must implement fall protection programs in their workplace.

Further duties of employer

4(2) without limiting the generality of an employer’s duty under subsection (1), every employer shall

(b) Provide to all his workers such information, instruction, training, supervision and facilities to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the safety, health and welfare at work of all his workers;

(c) Ensure that all his workers, and particularly his supervisors, foremen, charge hands or similar persons, are acquainted with any safety or Health hazards which may be encountered by the workers in the course of their service, and that workers are familiar with the use of all devices or equipment provided for their protection;

(h) Ensure that all of the employer’s workers are supervised by a person who

(i) is competent, because of knowledge, training or experience, to ensure that work is performed in a safe manner

* Safety Services Manitoba along with industry best practices recommend individuals who receive the Train the Trainer program, teach the program at a minimum of at least one time per year.  Trainers must also educate themselves to any legislative changes that could affect the course material content to be trained.  Our Train the Trainer certificates expire after 3 years.
