Joe Kutryk, CRSP, CHSC(R)

  • Occupational Safety Trainer and Professional Safety Consultant

Joe is a skilled and experienced safety consultant and instructor, having delivered OHS training across Canada in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Manitoba. As a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), a Certified Health and Safety Consultant (CHSC)(R) and a licensed Journeyman Electrician with over 40 years of experience, Joe has taught over 700 students during his time at SSM alone.

Joe’s first experiences as a frontline worker taught him the importance of proper safety training, supervision and peer support in the workplace. It was only when he moved to a position at a different organization that he realized the safety standard was not at the level it needed to be, which prompted him to join a Workplace Health and Safety Committee and begin his journey in the safety industry.

Joe’s background as an electrician informs his expertise as a safety trainer and consultant, having worked on projects with both Winnipeg and Manitoba Hydro and the Canadian Pacific Railway. He was a Field Safety Officer for Manitoba Hydro for 8 years, assisting the management team with compliance on the Corporate Safety Management System. This prepared Joe for his role as a Corporate Safety Officer, where he led a team that was responsible for developing and implementing the utility’s Arc Flash safety program. He was also responsible for the management of the arc-rated, flame resistant and hi-visibility protective clothing programs. The benefit of his knowledge and experiences gained in those responsibilities went into the development of the Workplace Electrical Safety workshop, a course he teaches to this day at SSM.

As a member at large and former Treasurer of Manitoba’s chapter of the Canadian Society of Safety Engineering (CSSE), Joe used this experience as a committee member for the first Assembly of Manitoba Safety Professionals. He also sat on the annual Safety Services Manitoba SAFE Work Conference Planning Committee for more than 10 years and served as an Education Coordinator for the Incident Prevention Association of Manitoba (IPAM).

Joe has a vested interest in educating people about their rights and responsibilities in occupational safety. He has his Certificate of Adult Education (CAE) having trained students at Red River College in Risk Management. Joe also volunteers his time writing questions for the CRSP certification exam and is a part of the BCRSP team that develops the certification exam for the Certified Health and Safety Technician designation.

Safety is important to Joe because he’s seen firsthand how preventable injuries affect young people and coworkers. He is also a parent of a young worker, which often reminds him of how important it is to train those who are exposed to potential dangers in the workplace. Outside of work, Joe is a skilled carpenter who makes his own furniture and an avid outdoorsman who enjoys hobbies like gardening, camping and fishing.
