Susan Everton

  • Road Safety Trainer

Susan has been a driving instructor since 1989 and with Safety Services Manitoba since 2005. Susan is SSM’s main instructor for the Mature Driver program funded by MPI; in her 9 years of teaching with SSM she has presented this program to 5,073 seniors across the province. These students are in addition to the over 16,700 she’s taught in other SSM driving courses.

Susan was involved in the Driver Education Program with MPI until 2010, during which time she taught the high school program and was recruited to do occasional liaison work with current instructors and taught new instructor courses for MPI. Susan also taught the Class 5 Driving Instructor Certification Course at Red River College in Winnipeg for 5 years, from 2005 to 2010.

When Susan joined SSM in 2005, she came to teach in-car track courses for Skid Control and Advanced Driving Skills. She was soon asked to start doing classroom work, beginning with the Responsible Driver Workshop, Defensive Driving Courses and eventually included Mature Driver Workshops, for which she was on the joint MPI/SSM committee to redevelop. Susan also worked on developing an in-car training curriculum for instructor candidates for Red River College.

Susan very much enjoys the challenges of the classes she teaches and finds it fascinating to meet such a variety of people, both in Winnipeg and travelling throughout Manitoba. As she says, “I believe the work I do has value and can have a positive impact on the people I meet, both for their driving and the safety of others on the road.”

When not at work, one of Susan’s favourite things to do is travel: she most enjoys a long, rambling – and safe – road trip to someplace she’s never seen before.

Her philosophy about safety is similar to a long, rambling road trip – “It’s not about the destination – it’s about the journey to get there.
